Almonds are the edible seeds of the almond tree (Prunus dulcis), a species native to the Middle East and South Asia, now widely cultivated in California, Spain, Iran, and other temperate regions. Though commonly called nuts, almonds are technically seeds of a drupe—a fruit with an outer hull and hard shell enclosing the seed.
